There was a questionable log on to my gmail account. It was offline. I went to the gmail site and changed my password. I went to Internet accounts and entered my new password. On the account preference in Mail 10.1 there is no place to edit incoming mail server. In the Server setting Tab it says Outgoing Server 'none'.
In Edit SMTP server I can chose Gmail but it says (offline) and when I close the drop down it goes back to none. I tried to set up a new gmail account and it says account already exists. I have been using Mail on my Mac for a long time. I changed the password on my Gmail account, was asked to reenter it on the Internet Accounts preference panes which I did.
As described above, the incoming server was 'offline' and there is no place to create it or correct it in the Mail preference. I restarted Mail, maybe I rebooted and it worked. This morning I rebooted my computer and the Gmail account is 'offline' again. I quit mail and restarted but it still is offline. I had no trouble signing into the account on my browser. Fortunately the Gmail account is not my most important one.
On a side note, when I tried to send a message from my icloud account, I was aked to chose a server. I said 'always use icloud. In the list Gmail appears as 'Gmail (Offline)' Thank you. I had tried something like that, but it always reverted automatically to 'None' (in the 'Outgoing Mail Account').
I ended up:. changing password on Google Gmail. sending a message to force password request. right clicking on 'Google' under inbox, and selecting 'Take Google Online'. quitting and restarting and it now all seems to work fine.
If other people have the same issue about reverting to 'None' I suggest trying the Right-Click on 'Google' under inbox (unless there is a better official solution). Anyway thanks for the responses. Sorry - none of this has helped in my case. Running Sierra 10.12.1.
GMail's outgoing server has simply vanished. Preferences for GMail show 'None' under outgoing server.
Connection Doctor doesn't help, as it shows that there is no SMTP server for GMail. GMail shows that it is online. 'Edit Gmail' - Server Settings, Outgoing Mail Account is 'None'. Dropdown shows Gmail. Select Gmail.
Wait 3 seconds, and window reverts to None. Choose 'Edit SMTP Server List'. Gmail is not listed. Create new outgoing server with correct Gmail SMTP settings. Wait 3 seconds, and window reverts to None.
Choose 'Edit SMTP Server List' again. Gmail SMTP server has vanished again. I can't right-click and take Gmail online, as it is already online. I can take it offline, then online again.
That makes no difference. Neither does closing MacMail and reopening. Tried creating a new Gmail account. It won't create, as the old one exists. Tried it as 'Other Mail Account' - can't connect - probably because you can't specify the settings. It really is ridiculous that an 'upgrade' to an app that worked properly is such a disaster now.
C'mon, Apple. Let's get this fixed! To check port settings an article is there: Please type your web mail id and its password in the empty field it will give the port numbers, in case if they are incorrect it will show immediately. And two or three days back I even removed all the SMTP settings and established the server settings with the same method as posted in previous screen shot, it showed no SMTP but it was configured after few minutes. Helper question. how to add the app-specific password to keychain?. app-specific password used in the Internect Access list?
Description and issues. The SMTP server is used to send mail. (Note: There are two locations you must paste you app-specific password, these instructions are for the 'sending' server, not the 'receiving' server') Go to Google and generate an app-specific password on. Now open Mail and go to Preferences Accounts and select your Google account. At the bottom of the right hand pane it will say 'Outgoing Server (SMTP):' and should have 'Gmail' selected/ Click on this and you get a pop up menu and select 'Edit SMTP Server List'. (This accounts area is where you paste in your 'recieving' password under 'incoming mail server'.
Incoming server should be: imap.gmail.com, your username should be the start of your email address without the '@gmail.com' section and your password should be the app-specific password, NOT the account password that was previoulsy used) This will open a list of the SMTP servers you have set up for sending mail. Click on the 'Gmail' one and then click on 'Advanced'. Set Authentication to 'Password' enter your Google user name then the app-specific password you generated in the password field. This should now work until you revoke the password. The old settings in Keychain can mess up the settings, actually observed earlier. After I removed the old settings from Keychain, things started to work so clean up the old passwords from Keychain!
And remember to input the app-specific password at least two times, not the Gmail password. Procedure. remove all passwords and usernames from Keychain that are related to the email you are trying to set up. follow the guide by but notice that you need to give the 'Application specific password' at least two times so screenshot it or copy it to paper. It is enough to create only one password (misunderstanding in earlier threads).
